Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky

‘Stars do shine but the night is dark without moon.’ Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky. Although, several college fests are organised across the country over the year but the grandeur of Thomso is majestic. Thomso, a much celebrated package of art, culture, expression with an overflow of excitement and energy, highlights IIT Roorkee’s cultural depth and ignites pride in its heritage and legacy. It nurtures the defining climate for cultural rejuvenation among the students who are in their formative years of creativity. Interestingly, it is continuously evolving since its inception in 1982 in terms of quality. Addition of innovative and diverse events along with broadening of its reach further adds to this evolution.

The heart of the fest is its theme- the central idea around which the fest revolves. For Thomso’18 the theme is ‘Seized By Stardust’ which rejoices the fascinations of the starry sky. As one may feel that gazing upon the stars, one loses himself in the bliss of silence and the peace of night. It’s the starry sky which can calm even the most furious. A simple activity as laying under the noir blanket of sky and witnessing the twinkling of the pellet like stars, twirling some millions of light years away, in their own stardust, can awe us all. And in the same spirit, we decided to take up this theme for the fest.

With sparkling aspirations, sterling accomplishments and bubbling enthusiasm, Thomso is a hub of the young and creative minds across the nation and receives a footfall of over 50,000 from over 800 colleges across the length and breadth of the country. The charm and splendor of Thomso has been winning hearts for more than 35 years now. Started back in 1982 by the students of University of Roorkee, it has played host to a multitude of talented scholars and media moguls in an annual celebration of culture and intellect.

The crux of the Thomso has always been its celebrity artists. Every year Thomso invites a cluster of very popular and talented artists that enchants the whole ambience of Thomso. To add their mystic to the magical stardust of Thomso’18, with one of the most acclaimed singer with a voice that makes heart of people swing with its melody, we will be having the very versatile figure Amit Trivedi with us for the fest. We believe this is going to be a great experience to be in a crowd that will move on the rhythm of his music.

To mix more of musical enthusia with the stardust of Thomso’18, we will be having an Indian Hindi rock band from Delhi, India. Since its inception in Chandigarh in 2008, the band has gone on to achieve massive commercial success and has become a staple in cultural and music festivals across the country. The Local Train is widely known for its emphatic lyrics – which are a blend of Urdu and Hindi- and their signature lies in a raw, honest sound which resonates with the youth. As of 2017, the band had amassed over 11 million views on its YouTube channel, which remains one of the fastest growing channels among independent artists in India.

Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee

‘Stars do shine but the night is dark without moon.’ Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky.

After WannCry there is new Variant named Petya Ransomware Emerged Spreading fast

Following the recent WannaCry ransomware attack, a new variant leveraging Petya ransomware emerged globally on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 starting in the Ukraine and spreading to millions of potentially affected people around the world. Machines which are up-to-date with Microsoft updates and security patches has a low probability of exposure. Unfortunately, this attack includes the ability to leverage one vulnerable machine on a network and propagate to other machines that were actually current. This has been reported second major ransomware attack in two months.

The malicious software will reach to machine through attachment or from melicious websites. The ransomware infects computers and then waits for about an hour before rebooting the machine. Thereafter it will started encrypting files on the computer. The ransomware takes over machine and will demands $300 as ransom. This ransom is paid in Bitcoins. This is not clear yet who is behind it, but thinkers assume someone who wanted the malware to look like ransomware. It is also guessed that the motive of this attack is destructive against Ukrainian Government. Security researcher Nicholas Weaver told cybersecurity blog Krebs on Security that ‘Petya’ was a “deliberate, malicious, destructive attack or perhaps a test disguised as ransomware”. Pseudonymous security researcher Grugq noted that the real Petya “was a criminal enterprise for making money,” but that the new version “is definitely not designed to make money.

This is designed to spread fast and cause damage, with a plausibly deniable cover of ‘ransomware’. The payment mechanism in the malware was inept to the point of uselessness because it has a single hard coded payment address, meaning the money can be traced. The requirement to email proof of payment to a webmail provider, meaning that the email address can be – and was – disabled; and the requirement to send an infected machine’s 60-character, case sensitive “personal identification key” from a computer which can’t even copy-and-paste, all combine to mean that “this payment pipeline was possibly the worst of all options (sort of ‘send a personal cheque to: Petya Payments, PO Box … ’)”

Steps once infected
Almost after one hour of infection Petya will reboot the computer. If you observe that you computer is infected, turn it off completely; Disconnect from Internet. Don’t think of paying ransome because the contact details provided may or may not be correct. Format your hard disk and reinstall operating system. Restore your files from backup.

Make sure you have genuine windows and all updates installed including all Microsoft security patches. Ensure good anti virus or Malware protection software is installed. Keep a good backup of important data. Don’t open attachment from unknown source. Understand well that nothing on internet is free now-a-days; everything comes packaged with something. Stay protected !!!!

The Tower Of Shadows Chandigarh

The Tower of Shadows is a uniquely built structure which is not only interesting but also adds to the beauty of Chandigarh city. Located close to the Legislative Assembly in the Capitol Complex, this airy, partially-open pavilion is a symbolic structure which reflects Le Corbusier’s interest in studying the penetration of sunlight inside a building. It traces the path of the sun through shadows, which are cast both inside and outside the tower.

This historical landmark was planned and built by the Swiss Architect Le Corbusier who also created the beautiful city Chandigarh. The Tower of Shadows is an architectural brilliance that describes the architect’s theories of sun control. The structure is specially designed in a way to study the solar movement. He wanted to prove that sunlight can be controlled within the four corners of the building. This will help in obtaining low temperatures in hot countries when the temperature is so high. Consciously, the tower of shadows was built between the Palace of Justice and the Parliament building in the Capitol Complex area. It is a tall, open sided hall which provides sufficient shade. The place is calm and beautiful, perfect for meditation. The structure is precisely aligned on the north-south axis so that it agreeably interrupts the severe symmetry of the enormous square. The tower’s north side is completely open and the other three faces are furnished with Brise-Soleil. Brise-Soleil is an architectural feature of a building that reduces heat gain ranging from simple patterned concrete walls to wing like structure. The simple pattern concrete wall structure was popularized by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier in which the sunlight was deflected to reduce the heat effect. Then there is a ramp which leads from this square to the Sunken Park.

The Tower of Shadows is a beautiful place to visit. Before visiting this place one needs to take necessary permission from the capitol complex. This place comes within the sensitive area where one has to follow security protocol.

WWE Nights of Champions

At Night of Champions, Seth Rollins will be fighting a battle on two fronts when he defends his WWE World Heavyweight Title against Sting and, as he learned on Raw, his U.S. Title against John Cena! John Cena invoked his re-match and got a nod from The Authority. Can Rollins withstand two iconic challengers in a single evening?
