Sukhna Lake – Prime attraction of Chandigarh

Sukhna is an inseparable part of the city of Chandigarh. Le Cor busier had foreseen that the residents of the city would be drawn it for the ‘care of the body and spirit’. The city planners were deeply attached to the lake. So much so that Pierre Jeanneret’s ashes were immersed in the lake in 1970 as per his wishes by his niece.

The roof of the ‘bandh’ or dam has become a favorite promenade. Serious walkers pursue an exercise regime, families enjoy an evening stroll and nature lovers mingle with children on roller skates. Photographers and painters love to capture its scenic beauty of the setting sun, or the heavily clouded monsoon sky, or the early morning mist in winter set amidst the tranquility of the lake. Even anglers do not leave unrewarded.

Sukhna has a membership-based Lake Club with lawns, a gym, indoor games, swimming pool and tennis courts with both synthetic and grass courts. Boating, rowing, sculling, sailing, kayaking and water skiing can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The lake, which was the venue for the Asian Rowing Championships, has the longest channel for rowing and yachting events in Asia. It also has facilities for other water sports like water surfing, skiing and sculling.

Sukhna is a sanctuary for many exotic migratory birds like the Siberian duck, Storks and Cranes, during the winter months. The lake has been declared as a protected national wetland by the Government of India.

During summers, there are streams of men, women and children from all walks of life offering voluntary service to desist the lake bed for about three months. This annual ritual has been a regular feature since long ago.

Sukhna Lake is the venue for many festive celebrations too. The most popular is the Mango Festival held during the monsoons when scores of varieties of mangoes are on display. From time-to-time other food festivals, featuring specialties from different Indian States, are also held here, along with cultural performances.

Natural Ways to Protect Your Hair from Scorching Summers

Summer season is almost there and the temperature has already began to increase day by day. This season is great for many things that we can enjoy such as chilled drinks, smoothies, fruit popsicles, ice-creams, sundaes, frozen yogurt, summer dresses, travelling, water parks and some like to spend time on beaches etc. But with all these fun things, it also brings with it some problems related to hair or skin damage which need to be taken care of. Due to scorching heat we tend to sweat a lot during this season, which attracts a lot of dirt and impurities on the scalp. To top it up, we also use heat products which make our hair frizzier. Summer is a time to go out and show your beautiful and shiny hair, not hiding the frizziness behind the scarf all the time. Apart from our skin, our hair also needs proper care from the scorching summer’s heat. The following are some ways to naturally protect your hair from sun damage.

  • Avoid Too Many Products – The scorching heat during the summers season already dries your hair and causes damage to them. Avoid too much chemical hair treatments or colouring in summers. If you want to go for such hair treatments do it a month or two before the season arrives.
  • Night Treatment – Night treatment is also good to tame those dry and frizzy hair. Apply a good quality leave-in-conditioner to the damaged parts of hair, wrap it in a towel or shower cap and leave it overnight to dry. Wake up with tamed and lustrous hair. The people who love to use home remedies can make a mask by taking equal parts of yogurt & mayo and 1 egg white and mix it together. Apply it for ½ an hour and rinse with normal water.
  • Shampoo Less Often – During summers the hair scalp gets sweaty due to which it attracts dust and impurities. To get rid of it we began shampooing our hair daily which strips your scalp its natural oils which further stimulates additional oil production and makes the need to wash it even more. If you want to get rid of the oiliness try showering it daily without using shampoo. If your scalp is super oily use natural dry shampoos instead of regular shampoos to go longer without shampoos.
  • Say No To Heat Products – There is already so much heat due to the temperature rising so high then what is the need of using heating products during this season. The use of these products will damage your hair even more.
  • Hot Oil Treatment – Hot oil Treatment is the oldest and one of the best natural hair repair treatments for hair damage. Natural oils like avocado oil, coconut oil or olive oil absorbs easily into your scalp. Use more of these after shampooing your hair from quarter ends to roots.  Rinse it properly and use conditioner to make them soft & hydrated.
  • Swimming – During summers we all love going for swimming to keep ourselves cool. When you are going swimming do not wash your hair before swimming as it will harm your hair of all protective oils. After swimming take a quick shower and use shampoo which contains ethylene tetra acetic acid that will remove the harmful effects of chlorinated water of the pool.
  • Comb them Properly – Combing your properly makes a big difference when it comes to hair care treatment. Avoid brushing your hair when they are wet as then they are more vulnerable to breakage. Use wide tooth combs for untangling your hair, they are gentler. To control frizziness tie you hair up in ponytails, braids, knots or buns. These updos controls frizziness and sweatiness.
  • Apart from this, use beautiful summer trendy scarfs to cover your hair from direct heat, trim them regularly, drink lots of water and take care of your diet. These are some of the natural tips to protect your hair from scorching heat.

Fun Activities Centres in Chandigarh for Kids

There is no doubt that younger generation of Chandigarh city is very talented. Youngsters are active thereby making the right use of their free time by joining them to hobby classes. The most important thing is that people can make the right use of their free time by putting themselves to an activity class of his/her choice. According to my point of view art of dancing; Traditional dance forms like Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kathakali; Western dance forms etc. boost physical strength in kids in addition to development of a new talent. Vocal & Instrumental etc. are good choices as well. Traditional dance forms are very expressive as well as require lots of physical fitness. There are many such institutions in Tricity which promotes traditional activities in Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and results in playing important role to generate new artists in the field of dancing, singing and Instrumental. To pursue your hobbies there are a number of bhawans opened by the Chandigarh administration.

  • Pracheen kala Kendra –  The Kala Kendra being one of the most renowned institutions was established in 1954, founded by Mr Kosar; Pracheen Kala Kendra has faculties for painting, classical dance forms like Bhartnatyam, Kathak, oddisi and instrumental music and vocal music.
  • Rajasthan Bhavan – The bhawan provides us with courses like taekwondo, salsa, contemporary, and break-dance, vocal and instrumental music.
  • Bal bhavan – Painting, music and dance.

Despite so many course options and infrastructure they manage to keep their prices within the pockets of people. But if we compare their prices to Saroj Khan’s dance academy these local academies outstand them, both in terms of attention to an individual and fee structure.
That’s not all! These institutes still conduct workshops for people who cannot join on regular basis and perform in front of people on popular platform in tricity like The Tagore Theater. These also help everyone to get an exposure and meet new budding artists. Yet we find another source to bring out our true potential.

So if you want to join this program you have the thumbs up from us rest depends on your efforts and interests. Best of Luck!

Do You know What is JalliKattu?

Jallikattu commonly known as Eru thazhuvuthal or Sallikkattu or Manju virattu is a bull taming event practiced in Tamil Nadu. The event is being practiced from the ancient times. Later it became a sign of bravery and prizes were distributed for having the guts to participate. This event is a part of Pongal Celebrations on Mattu Pongal day. During this event a running bull is released into a crowd of people. The participant over there tries to grab the hump of the bull for as long as possible with both the arms in an attempt to stop it or remove flags from its horns.

How Jallikattu is Played?

According to the Jallikattu Regulation Act 2009 a written permission is taken from the collector thirty days before the start of the event. Double barricading is done all across the arena to avoid injuries to the spectators standing around that area. Before the event, the bulls are tested by the authorities of the Animal Husbandry Department for animal drugging. For Jallikattu event the Bulls are gathered and prepared for the competition. Then the bulls enter the competition area via a gate called Vadi Vasal. To start the competition bulls are released through that gate. The rule is to only hold the bull’s hump for 30 seconds or for 15 metres. During this period if the person falls or is thrown by the bull lose the game. Only one person at a time is allowed to participate in this competition.

Jallikattu is played by different methods in different regions of Tamil Nadu. All the rules are same except some of them like the number of people and bull releasing techniques.

In 2004, Jallikattu was being banned by the Supreme Court terming that bulls could not be used for competition or bullock cart races. Since 2004, Federation of India Animal Protection Agencies and PETA India are also protesting against this event. The Animal Welfare Board of India had filled a case for banning Jallikattu permanently due to cruelty on animals and public safety.
