Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky

‘Stars do shine but the night is dark without moon.’ Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky. Although, several college fests are organised across the country over the year but the grandeur of Thomso is majestic. Thomso, a much celebrated package of art, culture, expression with an overflow of excitement and energy, highlights IIT Roorkee’s cultural depth and ignites pride in its heritage and legacy. It nurtures the defining climate for cultural rejuvenation among the students who are in their formative years of creativity. Interestingly, it is continuously evolving since its inception in 1982 in terms of quality. Addition of innovative and diverse events along with broadening of its reach further adds to this evolution.

The heart of the fest is its theme- the central idea around which the fest revolves. For Thomso’18 the theme is ‘Seized By Stardust’ which rejoices the fascinations of the starry sky. As one may feel that gazing upon the stars, one loses himself in the bliss of silence and the peace of night. It’s the starry sky which can calm even the most furious. A simple activity as laying under the noir blanket of sky and witnessing the twinkling of the pellet like stars, twirling some millions of light years away, in their own stardust, can awe us all. And in the same spirit, we decided to take up this theme for the fest.

With sparkling aspirations, sterling accomplishments and bubbling enthusiasm, Thomso is a hub of the young and creative minds across the nation and receives a footfall of over 50,000 from over 800 colleges across the length and breadth of the country. The charm and splendor of Thomso has been winning hearts for more than 35 years now. Started back in 1982 by the students of University of Roorkee, it has played host to a multitude of talented scholars and media moguls in an annual celebration of culture and intellect.

The crux of the Thomso has always been its celebrity artists. Every year Thomso invites a cluster of very popular and talented artists that enchants the whole ambience of Thomso. To add their mystic to the magical stardust of Thomso’18, with one of the most acclaimed singer with a voice that makes heart of people swing with its melody, we will be having the very versatile figure Amit Trivedi with us for the fest. We believe this is going to be a great experience to be in a crowd that will move on the rhythm of his music.

To mix more of musical enthusia with the stardust of Thomso’18, we will be having an Indian Hindi rock band from Delhi, India. Since its inception in Chandigarh in 2008, the band has gone on to achieve massive commercial success and has become a staple in cultural and music festivals across the country. The Local Train is widely known for its emphatic lyrics – which are a blend of Urdu and Hindi- and their signature lies in a raw, honest sound which resonates with the youth. As of 2017, the band had amassed over 11 million views on its YouTube channel, which remains one of the fastest growing channels among independent artists in India.

Haryana Urban Development Authority Introduces New Water Tariffs in Panchkula

From now on the residents will have to pay double the water bill. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has introduced new water tariffs in Panchkula with effect form Thursday.

The new water tariff will affect in a way that from now onwards the family living in a 10 marla house which inhabits 4-6 members have to pay Rs.900 against a water bill of Rs.400 for two months. The industry is also going to pay four times more for the same facilities.

From Rs.1.25 per kilolitre in the lowest slab, the lowest rate now will be Rs.5 per KL. The commercial and industrial water tariff has been fixed at Rs.15 per KL against the current rate of Rs.4 KL. A KL is 1,000 litres.

The water tariff was not revised since 2001 and the cost to supply water is around 70 crore whereas the department just has Rs.15 crore. By hiking the rates the department will be able to collect around Rs.300 crore. Besides the water expenditure the rest remaining amount is spent on the maintenance of boosting stations, tubewells and water works.

HUDA under its new water tariffs has intimated to the group housing societies to install water meters soon. According to the new rules the water usage of these societies will be properly metered.

50% of Panchkula’s 250 societies were being charged flat rates. But under the new norms they will no longer be sent average bills from the next billing cycles. They will be charged Rs.10 per kilolitre after consumption of 30 kilolitres. Besides residential, commercial and industrial will also have to follow the same suit.

The HUDA Officals shared that the increase in water tariffs in Panchkula has been notified with the approval of state government. With this they will be able to narrow down their operational losses and will be able to maintain adequate water supply.

Here’s How You Can Link Your Phone Number To Your Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar is something which has become an essential document, whether it’s to establish identity or avail the government’s security schemes or for financial matters or keeping your bank account active. According to a circular which was issued by the Department of Telecom (DoT) in March, Aadhaar based e-KYC was made mandatory for new mobile phone connections. The circular directed the Telecom companies to re-verify the existing user base pre-paid and post paid using the subscriber’s unique Aadhaar identity number and biometric details. The telecom companies have been given appropriate time to get this thing done. Some of us also have received a message asking to link our mobile number to our Aadhaar Cards. So it is necessary to link your existing valid mobile number to Aadhaar to keep using the services and avoid any issues in the future.

So, if you are linking your mobile number to Aadhaar for the first time, this needs to be done offline. Most online transactions are OTP (one-time-password) authenticated that is the OTP is sent to the registered mobile number. Obviously, online authentication is not possible as you are linking your number for the first time.

To do this offline you need to follow these steps:

– Visit your nearest Aadhaar centre to get the Aadhar Update or Correction Form or download it from the UIDAI website.

– Fill out the form correctly, submit it at the centre and mention on the form that only mobile number is to be updated.

– When submitting the update form along with photocopy of your Aadhaar card, provide photocopy of an Identity proof document such as PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID card.

– During the submission your biometrics will be verified at the enrolment centre. Your thumb impression will be verified. While applying for Aadhaar your biometrics will be recorded and to authenticate the changes they are verified.

– After verifying the biometrics you will be given an acknowledgement slip. It will take up to 2-5 working days for the updation to happen but as per the UIDAI helpline the turnaround time for the updation is 10 days.

– Updating of your mobile number can be done online but make sure that your existing number is linked to your Aadhaar, is active and handy before you go for the online update. This is because the OTP to authenticate the updation would be sent to your existing number. You will be able link your new mobile number with Aadhaar only after submitting the OTP sent on your old number.

– On the UIDAI website there’s an option under the Aadhaar Update tab that will redirect the user to the Aadhar Self Service portal.

– Enter the Aadhar number and Captcha text and request for OTP. The OTP will be sent to your existing mobile number and after submitting it you’ll be redirected to a new page, where you can update the details.

– Under Select field(s) to update, select Mobile Number. Now enter your new mobile number that you want to record in the database and submit.

Four Lane Road To Come Up Near Leisure Valley – GMADA

Four Lane road is coming up near the leisure valley to promote the upcoming night food street at Phase VIII, Mohali. Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has decided to construct this road to ease the traffic jam.

The project will be managed by a Delhi based company which will construct the entire road which will also house a shopping complex. Currently, there is only one road which leads to the night food street. The people coming from the Phase 7 area gets stuck in the traffic jam at the main light points. The work for the construction has already begun.

According to sources the GMADA official has shared that a total of hundred trees would be axed to make way for the road which would make it easier to reach Phase 8 and people would no longer have to stop at the light points at phases 7 and 8/9. A four-lane road, it would connect Phase VIII with the road leading to Burail jail. Henceforth, people need not use Phase 7 or Phase 9 to enter the night food street. This way, the traffic problem would be eased to some extent. GMADA’s Subdivisional Officer (Civil) Naveen Kamboj shared that they have taken permission from the concerned department to cut the trees and construction of the road would begin in a few days. The road will be built at one corner of the Leisure Valley and it will directly connect Phase VIII with the other road near the YPS school. The night food street is being developed near the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) headquarters at Phase 8.

The construction of the new road or street would also reduce the time period of reaching Phase VIII where offices of the Punjab State Electricity Board, GMADA, Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority or PUDA and the panchayat department are also located.

‘Patiala Ki Rao’ Chandigarh To Have 300m Shooting Range Soon

The Chandigarh city’s only shooting arena which is known as Patiala ki Rao is going to have 300m shooting range soon. This would be the first 300m range in the region and second in North India.

The 300m range will not only provide platform to the budding shooters from the region but also will help in imparting critical training to police personnel which will further make them equipped to handle and use advanced weapons. It would also be a boost for BSF, ITBP, CRPF and Army personnel who can now train here rather than going to Gurugram – in the region.

The work has been going on and the wall is almost complete. The process of allocating the tender for further placement of waffles is underway. The coach at Patiala Ki Rao, Holinder Kumar a gold medallist shared that its great that the 300m range is getting ready soon. Professional players and police personnel would benefit a lot from it; now, they wouldn’t have to go to other places for training.

Once the waffles are in place, weapon simulators will be installed which would help in making practice easier and practice cost will also come down. Efforts will be made to further develop and equip this range with all the latest and modern facilities to make it one of the best shooting range in the region – if not in the country.

On January 28, 2013, the then Punjab governor and UT administrator Shivraj Patil had fired the inaugural shot to mark the inauguration of 300m shooting range at Patiala ki Rao Chandigarh. But, the scientists from Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) recommended the upgradation of the wall and waffles for better safety and as a result further construction was necessary. The Patiala Ki Rao Chandigarh is said to be ready by the end of this year.

All Public Parking Lots Will be Managed by Women in Chandigarh

The city beautiful Chandigarh will soon become the first city in India, where parking lots will be managed by the women. Around 200 women would be hired and some will be provided by the Urban Poverty Alleviation and Livelihood Cell of the Municipal corporation for this purpose.

Under the Joint initiative of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and Arya Toll Infra Limited, a smart parking system will be launched in the second week of June, 2017. The company will be allotted a parking contract. Nearly 25 public parking lots in the different sectors of the city and multi-level parking in Sector 17 will be managed by the women attendants from 7.00am to 9pm. After this men attendants would manage the parking lots. The company also shared that to ensure the safety of the women attendants CCTV cameras are already there in every parking lot. Also the entire staff of their’s would have an internal WhatsApp group and if any attendant faces any issue, she can immediately post it there.

Municipal Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha confirmed the development. The specific date of the launch is yet to be announced. There would be designated pink parking spots in parking areas reserved for women drivers. Arya Toll Infra, which is a Mumbai-based company, was allotted the parking contract for Rs 14.78 crore.

For the last one year, the parking lots have remained without contractors, causing losses to the civic body. The project coordinator shared that the women are able to handle all kinds of situations well and they are good managers. Chandigarh is the best city to start this pilot in the country because it is comparatively safer than other cities. Also, motorists would be able to book parking space in advance through a mobile app which would be launched a day before the new smart parking system starts. The details of all the parking lots and the space available would be available on the app. For example a resident has to go to Sector 17, he can just book his parking space in the nearest parking lot of the sector. Online payments can be made through e-wallets or other facilities provided in the app.

If no parking space is available in the nearest lot, the details of other parking lots would automatically come on the app. A senior officer of the municipal corporation said that before rolling out the new system, all the women attendants would be imparted training that would be held next week.

The parking lots will have designated slots for senior citizens and disabled drivers. There are plans to have a system where slips issued for parking would automatically be generated in the name of the vehicle owner.
