Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky

‘Stars do shine but the night is dark without moon.’ Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky. Although, several college fests are organised across the country over the year but the grandeur of Thomso is majestic. Thomso, a much celebrated package of art, culture, expression with an overflow of excitement and energy, highlights IIT Roorkee’s cultural depth and ignites pride in its heritage and legacy. It nurtures the defining climate for cultural rejuvenation among the students who are in their formative years of creativity. Interestingly, it is continuously evolving since its inception in 1982 in terms of quality. Addition of innovative and diverse events along with broadening of its reach further adds to this evolution.

The heart of the fest is its theme- the central idea around which the fest revolves. For Thomso’18 the theme is ‘Seized By Stardust’ which rejoices the fascinations of the starry sky. As one may feel that gazing upon the stars, one loses himself in the bliss of silence and the peace of night. It’s the starry sky which can calm even the most furious. A simple activity as laying under the noir blanket of sky and witnessing the twinkling of the pellet like stars, twirling some millions of light years away, in their own stardust, can awe us all. And in the same spirit, we decided to take up this theme for the fest.

With sparkling aspirations, sterling accomplishments and bubbling enthusiasm, Thomso is a hub of the young and creative minds across the nation and receives a footfall of over 50,000 from over 800 colleges across the length and breadth of the country. The charm and splendor of Thomso has been winning hearts for more than 35 years now. Started back in 1982 by the students of University of Roorkee, it has played host to a multitude of talented scholars and media moguls in an annual celebration of culture and intellect.

The crux of the Thomso has always been its celebrity artists. Every year Thomso invites a cluster of very popular and talented artists that enchants the whole ambience of Thomso. To add their mystic to the magical stardust of Thomso’18, with one of the most acclaimed singer with a voice that makes heart of people swing with its melody, we will be having the very versatile figure Amit Trivedi with us for the fest. We believe this is going to be a great experience to be in a crowd that will move on the rhythm of his music.

To mix more of musical enthusia with the stardust of Thomso’18, we will be having an Indian Hindi rock band from Delhi, India. Since its inception in Chandigarh in 2008, the band has gone on to achieve massive commercial success and has become a staple in cultural and music festivals across the country. The Local Train is widely known for its emphatic lyrics – which are a blend of Urdu and Hindi- and their signature lies in a raw, honest sound which resonates with the youth. As of 2017, the band had amassed over 11 million views on its YouTube channel, which remains one of the fastest growing channels among independent artists in India.

Sukhna Lake – Prime attraction of Chandigarh

Sukhna is an inseparable part of the city of Chandigarh. Le Cor busier had foreseen that the residents of the city would be drawn it for the ‘care of the body and spirit’. The city planners were deeply attached to the lake. So much so that Pierre Jeanneret’s ashes were immersed in the lake in 1970 as per his wishes by his niece.

The roof of the ‘bandh’ or dam has become a favorite promenade. Serious walkers pursue an exercise regime, families enjoy an evening stroll and nature lovers mingle with children on roller skates. Photographers and painters love to capture its scenic beauty of the setting sun, or the heavily clouded monsoon sky, or the early morning mist in winter set amidst the tranquility of the lake. Even anglers do not leave unrewarded.

Sukhna has a membership-based Lake Club with lawns, a gym, indoor games, swimming pool and tennis courts with both synthetic and grass courts. Boating, rowing, sculling, sailing, kayaking and water skiing can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The lake, which was the venue for the Asian Rowing Championships, has the longest channel for rowing and yachting events in Asia. It also has facilities for other water sports like water surfing, skiing and sculling.

Sukhna is a sanctuary for many exotic migratory birds like the Siberian duck, Storks and Cranes, during the winter months. The lake has been declared as a protected national wetland by the Government of India.

During summers, there are streams of men, women and children from all walks of life offering voluntary service to desist the lake bed for about three months. This annual ritual has been a regular feature since long ago.

Sukhna Lake is the venue for many festive celebrations too. The most popular is the Mango Festival held during the monsoons when scores of varieties of mangoes are on display. From time-to-time other food festivals, featuring specialties from different Indian States, are also held here, along with cultural performances.
