Chandigarh to Get its First Woman SSP

A Punjab cadre IPS officer of 2008 batch that being Jagdale Nilambari Vijay is the first woman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Chandigarh. The SSP’s name has been approved by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The post of the city’s SSP was lying vacant after Sukhchain Singh Gill who was a 2003 batch IPS officer. The Administration recommended her name for the post to the ministry after it was approved by VP Singh Badnore, Punjab Governor-cum-UT Administrator from a panel of three officers received from the Punjab Government last month.

Chandigarh city has many women IAS officers at the senior level of the Administration. Long time ago, Ms.Kiran Bedi was appointed as the IGP of the city. Since then no women has been appointed on a top post in the police department. The ministry has also approved Shashank Anand for the post of Senior Superintendent of Police in Traffic, Chandigarh. This post was lying vacant since the term of a 2005 batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre, Maneesh Chaudhary ended in 2016.

Jagdale Nilambari Vijay is currently posted as SSP in Ropar. and the other officers in the list are serving in Patiala and Bathinda.

Punjab had sent a fresh list after the name of Inderbir Singh, former Sangrur SSP, was dropped from the panel after he was prima facie found guilty of extorting money from two farmers and allegedly threatening to implicate them in a murder case when he was posted as Sangrur SSP.

The UT administration had earlier rejected two panels sent during the political parties regime and requested the state government to send a fresh list of officers. The city SSP’s post has been lying vacant after Sukhchain Singh Gill, a 2003-batch IPS officer, was repatriated to Punjab in December last year. Eish Singhal is presently officiating as Chandigarh SSP.
