The higher education in India is facing several crisis due to the attacks from the central government and UGC. The funding of the universities, colleges and institutes of higher education by the government is systematically being withdrawn under the dictates of world bank. Yesterday the protest at Panjab University took an ugly turn when the angry students pelted stones at the university premises.

On this the distressed students carried out protests against the fee hike decision. The senior officials stated that it is a need of the hour. PU will be able to generate nearly Rs. 5 crores of income from this. They also added that if a student wants a quality education some amount is required to be paid for it. The fee hike is only on the courses which are getting good placements.
The new fee structure of Panjab University courses shall only be applicable to the students who took admission in the session 2017-18. The fee structure for existing students will remain same as earlier, only tuition fee will increase by 5%.

The unexpected hike in fee has distressed the students and their future career is now a major concern for them. Panjab University used to be one of the cheapest and top most universities of the country. With the fee hike the university has also approved few fee concessions for all courses. The students who have qualified their class twelfth examination from a government school or whose family annual income is lower than Rs. 5 lakhs will be eligible for fee concession upto 50% of the tuition fee.
Black Day At Panjab University
The protest at Panjab University took an ugly turn when the angry students pelted stones leaving 20 cops and 11students were injured. The clash started when the upset students who have been striking here for weeks asked to enter the Vice Chancellor office. The police prevented the students to enter his office which lead to the violent clash. The slogans rose against the MHRD and the UGC is not anti-state or anti-national. The fee hike upto 1000% on some courses for session 2017-18 is imposed by Panjab University on students. UGC and Union Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD) is pressurizing PU to increase their income from the internal resources. The protest by the angry students changed into a violent clash between the police and the students. Police used tear gas and water cannons against the protesting students who are demanding a rollback in the fee structure. The harassed police slapped criminal charges and other revolt charges against students of Panjab University. These charges ignited a national debate on the freedom of speech of an individual. On this, the University asked the police to drop the charges against the students. The protestors have asked for PU bandh organized by the joint action committee comprising students from various associations. ABVP which is not a part of the committee is going on a separate hunger strike.
The Students for Society (SFS) president said their movement for rollback in fee structure will get strengthen more after this incident. He further added Fee hike is unjustified. They will take this movement forward for the future of the students.
Some of the political leaders, ex-senator of PU and students described the police action as the most inappropriate and violent attack ever on students in the history of PU.
