Panjab University leaves behind IITs to break into World’s top 250

Panjab University, Chandigarh (PU) has beaten all 15 Indian Institutes of Technology to become the nation’s only educational institution to figure in Times Higher Education World’s Top-400 University Rankings for 2013-14.
Emerging as a surprise package, Panjab University, Chandigarh has left behind all the IITs to be India’s top-ranked university in Times Higher Education World’ Top-400 University Rankings for 2013-14. Announced on Wednesday in London, the rankings put the fourth-oldest Indian university in bracket of 226-250 way ahead of IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Roorkee, all four among only five institutions to feature in top 400.
PU, notably, is a full-fledged university as compared to science-oriented IITs. Other prominent universities including locally coveted University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Mumbai University among others didn’t find mention.
The Editor of Times Higher Education Phil Baty lauded PU for receiving high scores on citation impact, a parameter he pointed out showed that the research is being valued by global community.
Commenting on the ranking, PU vice-chancellor Dr Arun Grover was quoted as saying, “PU is India’s fourth oldest university and has producer luminaries like Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar and Hargobind Khurana. The university was ranked 380 by an international agency a few years ago.”
