Rain and Thunderstorm Alert for Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula as IMD Warns of Gusty Winds

Chandigarh, October 6, 2026: Residents of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula should prepare for a spell of unsettled weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds across Punjab and the Haryana-Chandigarh region.

According to the IMD’s warning issued on October 6, thunderstorm and lightning activity is expected on October 6, 7, 8 and 9. The warning covers Punjab as well as Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi. The department has not issued a warning for the region from October 10 onward in the current seven-day warning bulletin.

What residents can expect

The weather change is linked to an active system affecting northwest India. Local conditions can vary considerably across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, so residents should rely on the latest official forecast before making travel or outdoor plans.

For the Tricity, thunderstorms and gusty winds can create short-term problems even when rainfall totals are uneven. Motorists should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility, wet roads and debris from trees or temporary structures. People outdoors during lightning activity should move indoors rather than waiting for the storm to pass.

Punjab also under warning

The IMD has placed Punjab under the same thunderstorm and lightning warning for October 6 through October 9. A separate local report citing the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, said winds in parts of Punjab could reach 40–50 kmph on October 6 and 7, with further thunderstorms and stronger winds possible on October 8 and 9.

Such conditions can affect electricity supply, traffic movement and outdoor events. Event organisers across the Tricity should monitor updates before holding programmes in open spaces, while residents should secure loose items on balconies and rooftops where practical.

Safety remains important

During a thunderstorm, the safest option is to remain inside a substantial building or enclosed vehicle. People should avoid open grounds, isolated trees and exposed rooftops during lightning. Drivers should also slow down when roads become wet and be alert for water accumulation or fallen branches.

Residents should also keep an eye on official updates because the timing and intensity of thunderstorms can change quickly. The IMD warning is a broad regional alert and does not mean every locality will receive the same amount of rain or wind at the same time.

Schools, offices, event organisers and commuters can use the warning period to review plans and avoid unnecessary exposure during active storms. Any emergency situation should be reported through the appropriate local emergency services.

Why it matters

The warning is particularly relevant for Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula because the three cities have dense traffic and a large number of outdoor activities. A short period of strong wind or heavy rain can quickly affect commuting and public events. The latest IMD bulletin provides residents with several days of advance warning, making it easier to plan travel and outdoor activities safely.
