On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 tourists and injuries to over 20 others. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for this heinous act. The attackers, numbering between four and seven, were armed with M4 carbines and AK-47s and wore military-style uniforms. They targeted tourists in the scenic meadow, often referred to as “mini Switzerland,” a popular destination for its natural beauty and tranquility. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived around 2:30 PM and began firing indiscriminately at tourists who were picnicking, taking pony rides, or enjoying local eateries. Some survivors recounted that the attackers asked for names and religions before opening fire, suggesting a deliberate targeting of specific groups. A local Kashmiri Shia Muslim, Syed Adil Hussain Shah, heroically attempted to intervene and was killed in the process.
The victims hailed from various parts of India, including Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat, and West Bengal, as well as foreign nationals from Nepal and the United Arab Emirates. Among the deceased were a 26-year-old Indian Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau official. The injured were transported to nearby medical facilities, with some airlifted to Srinagar for advanced treatment.
In the aftermath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack as a “heinous act” and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Indian government launched a large-scale manhunt, deploying the Army, paramilitary forces, and local police. Helicopters were used for surveillance in the dense forests surrounding the attack site. Sketches of three suspects were released based on eyewitness accounts.
The international community expressed solidarity with India. Leaders from countries including the United States, Russia, China, and the United Kingdom condemned the attack. The United Nations Secretary-General also denounced the violence, emphasizing the need for accountability.
The attack has severely impacted tourism in the region, with many visitors canceling their trips. The local economy, heavily reliant on tourism, faces significant challenges as a result. Security measures have been intensified across Jammu and Kashmir to prevent further incidents.
